Caroll Grant Loomis was born and raised on the Central Coast Range of Oregon. Her playground consisted of swamps, streams, hills and forests. It was only natural that she would become a basket weaver. When she was in her teens, she lived in Northern California and learned to make twined baskets of willow roots and sticks from a Yurok basket weaver and later mastered coiling and beadwork.

She took drawing and water color classes from Bill Kucha, Joyce Gaffin and Bet Borgenson. Today she resides at her home of thirty years next to a small salmon spawning stream between the Siletz and Yaquina rivers.

She has incorporated gourds into her work as a canvas for her paintings; which have become a major part of her work. Caroll’s work is found at many festivals around the state as well as in many private collections all over the world. She is a member of the Osage Nation, and her work often reflects her heritage.

Caroll offers basket weaving workshops, gourd and beading workshops as well as private lessons. Her work is shown at Skybound Gallery in downtown Toledo. Her studio is located beside her home under a canopy of rich, lush forest just off Highway 20 at milepost 5, Sams Creek Road, first driveway on the left. Call for appointments.
