The Newport Symphony Orchestra (NSO) is the only full-season, professional symphony on the Oregon Coast. Home base for the orchestra is the 400-seat Newport Performing Arts Center, just a few steps away from the gorgeous Oregon seashore in historic Nye Beach. The NSO began in 1988 as the Yaquina Chamber Orchestra. The name “Newport Symphony Orchestra” was adopted in 2004.
Under Music Director Adam Flatt and Associate Conductor, David Ogden Stiers, the NSO offers a five-program season including the hugely popular free July 4 concert and a variety of education and outreach programs.
The NSO is committed to providing educational opportunities for the youth of Lincoln County. Free student tickets underwritten by local businesses are distributed for all NSO concerts and there is a reduced ticket price for students who do not receive free tickets.
NSO partners with Lincoln County School District to bring NSO musicians and conductors into classrooms to provide direct instruction and guidance to music students. Conductors and musicians of the NSO, as well as special guest artists, regularly visit and perform at local schools. NSO musicians also routinely work with the members of Lincoln County chapter of Oregon Music Teachers Association on student festivals and competitions.
Each April, the NSO brings the Portland-based Oregon Pro Arte Youth Chamber Orchestra (OPAYCO) to Newport to perform alongside talented local student musicians for an all-student audience.
NSO also partners with the Newport Public Library and Optimists Club of Yaquina Bay to bring family-friendly classical music to Newport’s recently established Literacy Park each July.
The Symphony for Seniors partnership involves the NSO, the Newport Senior Center, the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts, and the Newport Public Library. Through this partnership the NSO musicians and conductors provide lunch-time (pre-concert) lectures about the music and the composers for upcoming NSO concerts. In conjunction with Symphony for Seniors project, the Newport Public Library establishes exhibits of books and CD’s related to the upcoming concert too.
The mission of the Newport Symphony Orchestra (NSO) is to form and maintain a professional orchestra that performs diverse, high quality, classical music events.
