History has both a public and a private side, and the Lincoln County Historical Society and the Oregon Coast History Center serve both.
The Society has two museums—the Burrows House and the Log Cabin—which make up the Oregon Coast History Center at 545 SW Ninth St. in Newport. These facilities are used for exhibits and programs and also contain gift shops, the research library, and staff offices. Entry to the museums is by donation. The Society manages the Toledo Historical Museum located in Toledo’s City Hall and also is developing the Pacific Maritime & Heritage Center in a historic structure on Newport’s bay front.
Exhibits in the museums tell the early history of the area and change frequently. Recent exhibits include “Portals to the Past: Art as History,” which features artwork from the collection; “Newport Inc.,” the story of the development of the city of Newport; and “A Coastal Harvest,” the story of the area’s natural and cultivated resources. The Society collects and cares for artifacts, rotating them into museum exhibits rich with objects, photos, and storylines.
Traveling exhibits and programs, including presentations for school children and service organizations, move the story outside the walls of the museums. The Society also brings speakers and programs to the museums for community enrichment on topics as varied as the Civil War and heritage cooking.
The research library serves writers, historians, and individuals who are interested in their family history. Prints from thousands of historic photographs are available for personal use or publishing with graduated fees.
Membership in the Society starts at $10 a year. Members receive the quarterly newsletter, special invitations to events, and discounts in the gift shops.
