The Siletz Valley Friends of the Library supports our Siletz Public Library, library services and library development in the Siletz Valley area. The organization serves as the advisory board of the Siletz Library to the Lincoln County Library District which manages, staffs and provides books, supplies and equipment for the library. The City of Siletz owns the property (land and building).

In 2006, the Friends completed the funding and building of the new library for the Siletz area. Our Siletz Public Library now provides an appealing, attractive and accessible environment. It supplies ample space for library programs, extended collections, modern technology and meets Oregon Library Association Public Library Standards. It also has a meeting room to accommodate community needs for groups and individuals.

SVFOL members are ecstatic with the increased use of our library. Circulation has jumped from 9,861 in 2007 to 14,048 in 2008 (up 42.5%). In that same year, 196 patrons were added (up 34%). Monthly computer use in the old library was 83 hours compared to 602 hours in 2008 (726%). Library staff and volunteers provide computer instruction to seniors and others, including families who home school their children. Patrons use the on-line catalog at the library or from home computers to find, reserve and renew books, tapes, CDs and DVDs.

Children and parents enjoy Story Hour every Friday. One of the volunteers is Linda Hill with her reading therapy dog, Cooper. The Summer Reading Program attracts large numbers of kids and parents by bringing in quality presenters – made affordable by sharing the expenses among district libraries. SVFOL’s Cultural Activities Committee has sponsored live music and a display of visual artwork produced by community members. Spacious, secure display cabinets have featured Siletz tribal baskets; additional cultural displays are being prepared. Our library has become the “community living room” where all are welcome for entertainment, communication, education and enlightenment.

Three part-time staff (18 hours each per week) and from 8 to 15 volunteers per month keep the library open four days per week. The LCLD librarian devotes at least four hours per week direct services at Siletz.

Patrons bring their own notebook computers to the library to take advantage of the free, unfiltered high speed Internet access. Business people and travelers have learned that they can park near the library and get Wireless free Internet access (WiFI).

The Friends is now focusing on a “donor brick campaign” to raise money for an endowment fund which will support future repairs and scheduled maintenance. Used books are on sale at the library to support other activities. Cash donations are always welcome to help support operating costs and special programs.

Come enjoy our Siletz Public Library. Our current hours of operation are:
Wednesday 10 AM to 6 PM
Thursday 10 AM to 8 PM
Friday 10 AM to 6 PM
Saturday 10 AM to 6 PM

If you’d like to help keep the library strong and alive, please volunteer, join SVFOL or support the library in other ways.
